Introduction
Thomas Edison invented the modern little light bulb that we know. He in fact invented the whole electric lighting system as we know it. He thought it would take a few weeks.. It actually took him over two years…. and thousands and thousands of attempts. Could what happened to Edison happen to you?
Thomas Edison was one of the world’s greatest inventors, yet his work on improving the light bulb didn’t go as he planned. His initial efforts were unsuccessful, despite his confidence that they would work. But he persevered, not allowing the initial (if you can call over 9000 failed efforts “initial”) failures to deter him. Like Edison’s first light bulbs, it is possible that your grade 12 results won’t turn out as you hope. And like Edison found, it is possible for you to still reach your ultimate goal despite things not working out as you planned.
With every light bulb that didn’t work, Edison learnt which methods and materials were unsuitable, and tried alternate options. At MGI, the alternate option available when grade 12 results didn’t go quite as planned, is the Pre-degree Programme.
All study programmes at MGI have specific entry requirements, usually a specific set of subjects at grade 12, and a minimum number of points scored. A point value is allocated to each final mark scored, and the points totalled. If you have an inappropriate subject choice or too few points for the desired degree, this is an indication that you would struggle on the degree, as you do not currently have the level of knowledge or academic skills needed to cope, and thus are not permitted to register for the desired degree programme. You might not want to believe it, but this is to protect YOU from failure. However, performance at school does not always show what a person is actually capable of, and it may be possible that despite a poor performance at school, you may excel in a tertiary environment. But this is something which needs to be demonstrated before degree access is permitted.
In a nutshell, if you do not meet the MGI degree entry requirements, but have passed grade 12, and would like to study at MGI, you may then register for the bridging year – the Pre-degree programme, a year long programme to bridge the gap between grade 12 and first year university studies. |
