MGI’s premier debate team had its first official debate on Tuesday the 22nd of September.
The motion on which the debate was based was a controversial one: Prostitution should be legalised for 2010 and beyond. The government agreed with the motion, while the opposition stood against it.
Janeske Botes, MGI lecturer, Riccardo Pizzi, a student advisor and Cary Oldacre, also a lecturer, were adjudicators for the debate.
There were four speakers for each side of the debate. After the first speaker from government, the debate got under way and heated up with every speaker’s point of argument. According to Botes, a Political Science lecturer, the opposition won due to the logical structure of their argument and the fact that they had a sound policy in place that supported their case.
Student advisor and adjudicator, Pizzi said that he was impressed with the standard of the debaters’ performance. “You guys [debate team] have a lot of raw potential.
